One night as my wife Samantha and I were walking she asked if I wanted to meet a woman who she had been visiting. This woman was homeless and lived in the stadium. She was the one we gave blankets and clothes for her baby. I said yes and we went to see her. On the way Samantha tells me of her situation, that since she has lived in the stadium she often gets raped in the middle of the night because she sleeps in the open and it is pitch dark. Samantha continues to tell me that she is very traumatized because of abuse and rapes and the affects of hunger, rejection and living on the street. We meet her and talk to her and pick up her little baby boy and just show a little love as we conversed. I look around at the blankets on the floor and how dirty the surroundings are. I simply think to myself, this cannot be and not here in the place where we live. I didn’t speak many words about Mama J and her son Bonfils. My wife says we need to do something and I answer her that we will.
I speak to Audrey the next day and we start to make arrangements of housing and a budget for food and needs. Things get busy and a few days later my wife tells me that Mama J was taken to the hospital with malaria and she was too weak and died. They are trying to find a home for baby Bonfils. Before she could even ask I said “Let’s take him”.
My heart was broken and a scar was left just thinking. We already had a home and were about to take her…would she have lived if we acted right away? My heart hurt and my faith was challenged because the only reason we processed everything was because our budget just about covers our needs.
Baby Bonfils came to be with us at TCOAC on February 2nd 2017. Though his life now is good, I always think when I see him, could we have saved his mother too? Very often our life is full of people in need and we even give of our selves and what we have, but always struggle surrounded by needs, hurt, pain, hunger and we must choose by what we are capable of doing.
